As If – a poem

little did I know
I was really looking
for a way to belong

I used you
and the book
others wrote of you
as a way to divide
the world
into camps
which always had me
at an advantage

us and them

in and out

clean and dirty

lost and found

winners and losers

as if
as if
as if your love
was partial
and the incarnation
was not enough
to hold it all

as if I
was not included
in the cosmos
you reconciled
into your selves

as if sin
and death
and my beliefs
were more powerful
than your passion

as if I
ever belonged
to any group
other than

Thank you David, for this poem. It’s so powerful and beautiful. I’ve loved browsing through your poems over the last few weeks after I saw you were featured by my friend Miriam Miles. Then Paul Young read Kind of Way on The Connected Life podcast a couple of weeks ago, and it just blew me away. It was a beautiful way to distill his story into a potent moment of truth. Just wonderful. I’m so grateful to you for sharing your work.
