HELD – Poetry on unconditional embrace

“Dad, I’m gay.”
Confessed the young man
And his father embraced him
Just as he’d always done

“Mum, I’m gonna be a single mum.”
Confessed the young woman
And her mother embraced her
Just as she’d always done”

Dad, I don’t agree with the notion of a literal hell.”
Confessed the young man
And his father embraced him
Just as he’d always done”

Mum, I don’t know if I believe in God anymore.”
Confessed the young woman
And her mother embraced her
Just as she’d always done”

Dad, I’ve enrolled to study climate science.”
Confessed the young woman
And her father embraced her
Just as he’d always done”

Dad, I’m moving overseas to start a family.”
Confessed the young man
And his father embraced him
Just as he’d always done
