This collection of 57 poems explore the life-giving and often painful experience of wrestling with God, religion and one’s place in the world. David Tensen draws from empathetic experience through burnout, bankruptcy and belief; wrapping words around experiences some have described as healing psalms of lament and wonder.
Whether you are a lover of poetry or not, The Wrestle offers hopeful words to hearts desperate to rediscover God – all the while, giving courage to voices lost in the midst of life’s suffering. Available in Paperback, eBook and Audiobook narrated by best-selling author of The Shack, Wm. Paul Young.
THE WRESTLE
I found you
beyond
the ‘why’.
Far from
the ‘why not’.
Worlds from
the ‘why me’.
You held a space for me
beyond answers
to questions
my pain had
as if you knew
information was
never
going
to
heal
or resolve
or fix
my suffering.
Instead,
you agreed to wrestle
through many nights.
Never letting go.
Always with me
just like you promised.
Refusing to surrender
I eventually realised
that wrestling with God
was not a crime.
That I was, in fact,
being held.
Being healed.
Being transformed by finding
you beyond answers.
Being blessed
by holding on to you
in my doubt and frustration
and never letting go.
And you never let go.
And you overcame me in the end.
And we both won.

Craig Weir –
Wow… I have thoroughly loved reading The Wrestle.
You can’t take someone on a path you have not journeyed down yourself. David’s words strung together in verse, I found, unlocked doors in my own heart and emotions. Like a mime being watched your brain and heart takes on what is expressed relating it to oneself, recalling moments, maybe forgotten or lost in time as well as moments raw and recent.
Some of the verse giving expression to feelings you can’t quite describe yourself, although you have been down that similar path.
Soothing, healing, provocative, comforting, emotive, real and revealing are some of the words that come to mind whilst reading.
These poems are treasured not just because they are words skilfully strung together, but because David’s words are also vulnerable and sacred coming from a heart that has been graced by Love.

Reading this book the first time, I found myself being strangely impatient wanting to read it all at once but at the same time wanting to absorb the truth and meaning. Sometimes I sit in a poem loving that my feelings have found a voice. Sometimes I can’t sit still enough in the poem because it hurts a little, it is too true and knowing it is true is hard I can only touch on it and come back later and absorb a little more. The implications for me are painful and freeing at the same time.
A beautiful book I have immediately promoted to an all time favourite.
