I wrote this a few days ago and wish to share it with you.  To me, hand washing has become a kind of incremental baptism.  As we move into this liminal period of lock-downs and isolation, my hope is that we will all emerge far more humane and compassionate than before.

SOAP FILM PRAYER

My prayer is that
when the soap film is washed
from every hand
we appear from our dwellings
with cleaner hearts
wider arms
and eyes so bright
we see the beauty
in every good thing.

My prayer is that
when the soap film is washed
from every hand
we find ourselves grounded
with tender hearts
loving arms
and eyes so healed
we see our worth
in a stranger’s smile.

My prayer is that
when the soap film is washed
from every hand
we emerge compassionate people
with forgiving hearts
generous arms
and eyes so open
we see no problem
in fickle inconvenience.

My prayer is that
when the soap film is washed
from every hand
we fall into the gift of us
with fragile hearts
binding arms
and eyes so kind
we see through darkness
into all we could be.
