When the forest wept – a poem

that time
the gum tree
mocked the fern
for its smallness
all the forest wept.
it had forgotten
how forests work.
it had forgotten
that design was not a choice.
‘perhaps the gum tree
has been waving at men
from above the canopy
and listening to their
prideful reason.’
the fungus whispered.
